Fogo Island

Cabo Verde (since 2021)

  • Location: sotavento group of the Cabo Verde archipelago (15° 03′ N and 14° 48′ N; 24° 16′ W and 24° 30′ W)
  • Municipalities: São Filipe, Santa Catarina and Mosteiros
  • Area: 476 km²
  • Population: approx. 66,500 inhabitants (2021)
  • Connections: relatively isolated, with no international airport and limited air or ferry connections to other islands
  • Veterinary services: there is no permanent veterinarian presence
  • Curiosities: in 2020, the islands of Fogo and Maio were declared UNESCO World Biosphere Reserves, the first of their kind in Cabo Verde. The island is renowned for the Pico do Fogo, the highest mountain in Cabo Verde, at 2,829 meters. The last volcanic eruption occurred on November 2014

The Fogo Island project began in 2021 in São Filipe, following a city council request for assistance with street animal management and improving animal and public health. It expanded in 2022 to include Santa Catarina and Mosteiros. Since then, we have conducted annual campaigns, spending time in each municipality based on needs and budget.

Managing street animals on Fogo has been challenging, particularly in urban areas, due to occasional lack of support or indifference from the local population. However, community interest seems to be growing each year. Currently, canine and feline populations show improved health and body condition, and lower parasitic loads compared to earlier campaigns. Furthermore, while some unsupervised street animals remain, many of them are now castrated.

This ongoing programme relies on collaboration with the Municipalities, the Delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment of Fogo, and Projecto Vitó, requiring sustained efforts to maintain progress and address challenges.

Results

  • 4 years of work (2021-2024)
  • 4 castration and deworming campaigns carried out in various locations across the island
  • 1,440 castrations performed
  • Over 2,000 parasite treatments delivered
  • Other additional medical and surgical treatments performed
  • More than 600 children and teenagers informed and made aware of animal welfare, basic care for animals and public health
  • Street dogs in the city of São Filipe monitored biannually, using the Talea® application (ICAM)
