São Nicolau Island

Cabo Verde (since 2023)

  • Location: barlavento group of the Cabo Verde archipelago (16° 29′ N and 16° 40′ N; 24° 00′ W and 24° 25’ W)
  • Municipalities: Tarrafal and Ribeira Brava
  • Area: 242 km²
  • Population: approx. 12,000 inhabitants (2021)
  • Connections: relatively isolated, with no international airport and limited air or ferry connections to other islands
  • Veterinary services: there is no permanent veterinarian presence
  • Curiosities: it is a mountainous island with an economy that is primarily agricultural. The island is home to two of the natural landmarks that have been recognised as the “7 wonders of Cabo Verde”: Carbeirinho and Parque Natural de Monte Gordo

The project on São Nicolau Island officially began in 2023 in Tarrafal. Since its inception, we have visited the island approximately every six months for campaigns, covering all locations within the municipality and carrying out a variety of activities tailored to specific needs.

São Nicolau is a beautiful island with warm and welcoming people. From the very first campaign, we felt embraced by the communities. After three campaigns, the canine and feline populations in the municipality exhibit better overall health, improved body score condition, and reduced levels of parasitism. Furthermore, most animals seen unsupervised on public roads are already castrated, and the number of new litters has significantly decreased. Despite these encouraging results, challenges remain, and there is still much work to be done.

The cat and dog population management program is ongoing and operates in close collaboration with the team from Tarrafal City Council and the Delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment on São Nicolau Island. Discussions are also underway to expand the program to the second municipality on the island, Ribeira Brava.
